Psychological
Services

Dr. Marlena Wu was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but lived in Indonesia and Singapore prior to her undergraduate work at Washington University in St. Louis. There, she obtained a B.A. in Psychology, and continued her education by completing a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Wright State University’s School of Professional Psychology. She joined George Mason University’s Counseling and Psychological Services in December 2007.

In therapy, Dr. Wu values a strong positive relationship with the student, one in which the student can feel safe and supported. She believes that exploring who a person is, not just as an individual but though their positions in social, familial, cultural and community circles, is essential for understanding how that person sees him/herself. Through this process, people can become more knowledgeable of their own actions and behavior, and start creating change and acceptance in their lives.

Dr. Wu has had experience with a range of clinical issues such as depression, stress and anxiety, academic difficulties, relationship issues, trauma, eating disorders, and substance abuse. In addition, her areas of special interest include multicultural issues, particularly for international and Asian-American students, diversity awareness, identity development, relationship concerns, and stigma reduction around counseling.
