Joanna H. Zimmerman, a Pre-Doctoral Clinical Psychology Intern, is in her last stage of training required for the completion of her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.  Originally from the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area, she completed a B.A. in Psychology from Brandeis University in Massachusetts and then went on to work in a residential treatment facility for adolescents in New Hampshire.  From there, she received an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Catholic University, the same university from which she expects to receive her Ph.D. in 2009.  In addition to residential treatment, Ms. Zimmerman has worked with clients at counseling centers, an eating disorder clinic, a secondary school, and a private practice office.

Ms. Zimmerman’s primary aim is to provide a collaborative, safe, and supportive environment in which clients feel valued, empowered, and comfortable sharing their concerns.  Her approach, which is influenced primarily by self-psychological, interpersonal, and cognitive-behavioral theories and techniques, encourages the development of insight, increased coping skills, and willingness to change.

Ms. Zimmerman’s areas of clinical interest include body image concerns and eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and relationship difficulties.  She is also interested in the process of emerging adulthood, including the development of identity and intimacy in relationships.  On a personal note, Ms. Zimmerman enjoys yoga and meditation, cooking, and ‘just being.’
