Joseph D. Reid, Jr., associate professor of economics, received
his M.B.A. in Finance (1965) and M.A. (1970) and Ph.D. (1974) in
economics from the University of Chicago. In 1972, he received
an Honorary M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. When not
in school, he was an insurance company executive and a commissioned
officer in the Public Health Service. Professor Reid has taught
economics at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of
Chicago, Southern Methodist University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute,
and George Mason University. He has published extensively on the
economic history of the agricultural South and on labor unions
in the private and the public sectors. He also has published models
and analytical explanations of political change, economic development,
and the transactions demand for money. Currently, Professor Reid
is completing a monograph on the evolution of public employment
in the United States and a collection of articles and essays on
economic development.
