Please join me in congratulating Thomas Stratmann for winning, along with former GMU Economics undergrad Jared Garner, this year's Duncan Black Prize. This Prize was awarded for their paper "Judicial Selection: Politics, Biases, and Constituency Demands", published last year in Public Choice.

J C Bradbury, who graduated a few years ago and is currently an assistant professor at the University of the South, was highlighted in the NY Times Magazine for his work on the economics of baseball --- in particular the application of the concept of moral hazard to hitbatsmen in the NL versus the AL.

Virginia Political Economy is the inaugural volume in a new series, Liberty Fund's The Selected Works of Gordon Tullock. In this volume, GMU Professor Charles K. Rowley edits a collection of diverse essays arranged in thematic clusters, which together provide a primer on Gordon Tullock’s original and extraordinary scholarship from 1954 to 2002.

The Program in Economics, Politics and the Law (PEPL), replaces the Program in Economics and the Law. The Program, directed by Charles K. Rowley, is located in the James M. Buchanan Center, and commenced operations in July 2004.

Dr. Vernon Smith was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics
Along with Dr. Daniel Kahneman, Dr. Smith was given this award "for having established laboratory experiments as a tool in empirical economic analysis, especially in the study of alternative market mechanisms."
