Economics BA Course Lists/Explanations

Foreign Language (College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (LAHS) Requirement):
This requirement is fulfilled by completion of foreign language course at the intermediate level (9 credits) or above or by a satisfactory score on an approved proficiency test. See the Foreign language department. International students should consult CHSS Student Academic Affairs about a possible waiver of this requirement.

Quantitative Reasoning (University Requirement):
Econ BA students need an appropriate placement score on the Math Placement Test and MATH 108.

Literature (University Requirement):
CLAS 250, 260, 340, 350, 380; ENGL 201; FREN 325, 329; PHIL 253; RUSS 325, 326, 353; SPAN 325.
ENGL 100 or 101 is a prerequisite for all Lit courses except PHIL 253; some Lit courses have additional prerequisites. PHIL 253 has no prerequisites and may also be used to satisfy the Philosophy/Religious Studies requirement.

Fine Arts (University Requirement):
ARTH 101, 102, 200, 201; AVT 103, 104, 222, 232, 262, 272; DANC 101, 125, 131, 145, 161; MUSI 100,101, 107, 301, 302; THR 101, 150, 151,195, 210, 230. See the University Catalog for prerequisites.

Philosophy and Religious Studies (CHSS Requirement):
Any PHIL or RELS course. PHIL 253 may also be used to satisfy the Literature requirement.

Social and Behavioral Sciences (University Requirement):
HIST 100 is required for all GMU students (with some substitutions available for transfer students – see History department). An additional 3 hours of Social Science is also required. Economics majors will fulfill this requirement with Econ 103.
Three Additional Hours of Social and Behavioral Sciences (CHSS Requirement):
Courses chosen from: ADJ, ANTH, ECON, GEOG, GOVT, PSYC, SOCI. Econ majors will fulfill the requirement with ECON 104 and 3 hours one of the others listed. ANTH 114 and GEOG 101 will also satisfy the Non-Western Culture requirement.

Natural Science (University & CHSS Requirement):
The University requires 8 hrs of Natural Science that need not be in sequence for BA majors. Courses chose from ASTR, BIOL, CHEM, GEOL, or PHYS.

Global Understanding (University Requirement):
Many University approved courses satisfy this requirement, but most Economics majors will choose one of these courses: ECON 360, 361, 362, 380 or 390, which will also satisfy course requirements in economics.

Non-Western Culture (CHSS Requirement):
Many CHSS approved courses satisfy this requirement. See the course catalog for a complete list. However, ECON 361 and 362 satisfy ECON course requirements at the same time. ANTH 114 and GEOG 101 are approved Non-Western courses (with no prereqs) that will also satisfy CHSS social science requirements. Students who have attended a native school in a non-western country for 4 or more years may request a waiver from this requirement through the CHSS Student Academic Affairs Office.

Information Technology (University and Major Requirement):
The CS department administers an IT 103 proficiency exam for credit. See http://ait.gmu.edu/it103/it103-testout.htm. This exam is sufficient for the Econ dept requirement, but to satisfy University GenED you need a 1-hr ethics class to complement the exam. CS 105 and PHIL 112 are options.
