Academic Research

Doing a more formal "school oriented" research project is quite similar to the research experience just described about buying a car.

Let's apply some of that research attitude to a researched paper in ENGL 100 or ENGL 101.

Here is a typical research assignment in ENGL 100 or ENGL 101:

Write a 6-8 page informative paper on a topic that interests you. You need to use at least six sources, four of which must be from scholarly books and articles. The paper is due in six weeks.

And so you think...

In my looking for information for my car in a car magazine, I read about emission rates of different cars. I got to thinking how important these rates might be in deciding on a car, since I'd heard a discussion about global warming on TV. And last winter we've had weird weather Northern Virginia—like a warmer-than-usual winter with almost no snow. Some people blaming global warming but others say it is just "normal climatic variation"—whatever that means.

So you decide to find out about global warming for yourself.
