Using and Understanding Databases

Now that we have a selection of keywords, we can begin our search for sources that will help us answer our research questions.

The University Libraries at Mason have over 1,000,000 books, over 5,000 periodicals in hard copy with an additional access over 25,000 periodical online.  With all these sources available for our use, we need.

We have such a system in the over 30 databases found online through the University Libraries web page. These databases are produced by companies that are experts in organizing and accessing information.  The University Libraries have purchased the use of these databases to support research at Mason.

A database is like an electronic filing cabinent filled with folders.

The folders in a database are called records.  Each record identifies the source, such as a book, article, or video, as a whole.

Within each record are descriptive fields:

  • title of the book, article, or video
  • title of the periodical in which an article is found
  • subject headings
