Checking Spelling

Another useful feature of Word is a built-in spell-checker. To check the spelling of your paper, pull down Tools > Spelling and Grammar…. A window like the one below will pop up. Words that are "Not in Dictionary" will appear in red, and Word provides a number of spelling suggestions. Simply pick the correct word and then click on the "Change" button.

Tip: If you have a tendency to use a word often in your writing that is not in the Word dictionary (such as your name, a city name, etc.), you can add it to the Word dictionary by clicking on the "Add" button. This will semi-permanently change the dictionary on the computer on which you are working.

There are many words such as proper nouns or specific terms that the Word dictionary does not know how to spell correctly. The name "Seamus," for example, is spelled correctly but is not recognized by Word. If you know the spelling is correct, click on the "Ignore" button to skip the word in red or "Ignore All" to skip all of the times your essay has the word "Seamus."
