This course examines the linguistic competence of the second language learner, with an emphasis on syntactic and morphological development. Through a review of current literature, we will address some of the key issues in the field: What is the initial state of L2 acquisition? Are interlanguages always constrained by Universal Grammar? What is the nature of near-native competence? What does morphological variability tell us about underlying linguistic competence?
