The Goals of the Society

The Washington Classical Society is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting an appreciation of the cultural legacy of Classical Greece and Rome throughout the National Capital area. Incorporated in 1963 and open to everyone with an interest in the Classics, the WCS honors the vital contributions of classical Mediterranean culture to Western civilizatgion, while upholding the finest creations of Antiquity as models of style and lasting sources of inspiration. Through meetings, lectures and the publication of its newsletter The Capitolium, WCS seeks to increase public awareness of the many enduring issues addressed by the Classical tradition, as well as to emphasize its historic role in American education and culture. By conveying the living presence of Classical ideals to the community at large, the Washington Classical Society strives to make the timeless wisdom and grandeur of our Classical heritage accessible to all.
