FRIEDA R. BUTLER, PhD, RN, MPH, FAAN, FGSA, Professor at George Mason University, College of Nursing and Health Science, is Director of the University's Gerontology Certificate Program. Dr. Butler was appointed Visiting Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine, Section of Geriatrics and Adjunct Professor of Medicine,Howard University, College of Medicine, Department of Community Health and Family Practice. She has served as consultant, Gerontological Authority and Health Advisor to numerous agencies and organizations such as the American Public Health Association, USAID, Ebon Research Systems, Urban Shelters and Health Care Systems, Inc., Consumers United Insurance Company, the National Center on Black Aging, Inc., First American Bank, TV Channel WHMM, and the Senate Special Committee on Aging. She recently served as consultant to the DC Superior Court Monitor for DC Village Nursing Home.Dr. Butler's service on boards of Directors include intensive work with the National Center on Black Aging, Housing Division where she served as chair of the Health Committee; the Washington Area Geriatric Education Consortium and Gunston Senior Center. In addition, she has chaired the George Mason University Gerontology Advisory Board since 1994 and has served on the founding board of Gilda's Club Greater Washington. She currently serves on the Board of the Washington DC Area Geriatric Education Center Consortium (WAGCC). Dr. Butler has written and been the recipient of a number of project and research grants in various areas of health. In addition to developing the first Adult Health Nurse Practitioner Program in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area(1974), Dr. Butler was the founder and director of the first Nurse Managed Wellness Promotion Center for the Minority Elderly in the DC Metropolitan area(1980). Her awards and honors include Nurse of the Year Award for Research, Service and Education presented by the Quad State Nurses Association(DC, Maryland West Virginia and Delaware), Sigma Theta Tau, Sigma Xi(National Scientific Research Society) and a number of commendations. She has completed and published  individual  and collaborative interdisciplinary research which she has presented nationally and internationally.

Her research areas include health promotion and wellness; minority elderly; health care utilization, behavior problems in nursing home residents, neuroleptics and behavior in elderly nursing home residents; restraint use and behavior in nursing home residents; and grandparents and primary care givers. Her curent research focuses on issues at end of life. In addition to numerous journal articles, other publications include a book: A Resource Guide on Black Aging,  and a book chapter titled: "Observational Methods for Nursing Home PatientsReceiving Neuroleptic Medications" in  Psychopharmocotherapy in Old Age:Principles of Research and Clinical Implications. She has held office in numerous professional organizations, served as project and research grant reviewer, expert panel member of NINR, and manuscript reviewer for professional journals.
