Here are the Steps:
Step 1:
Secure the student
teaching application either on line (the
application can be typed online with Adobe Writer) or from departmental
secretary in PW1 Room 303. The completed, typed application is
to be reviewed and signed by your academic advisor. He/she confirms that
you (1) have satisfactorily completed ALL required course work prior to
student teaching, (2) have taken the PRAXIS I with test scores in reading,
mathematics, and writing, and (3) have a 2.50 degree-specific GPA for
the last 60 hours of course work.
Your academic advisor
will also check to see that you have all the required attachments to the
application packet (see Step 2 for attachments). Among the attachments
is the unofficial transcript of your academic records. Unofficial GMU
transcripts are available at no charge in Enterprise Hall, Room 420, or
Prince William Building One, Rm 202, Monday-Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
Step 2:
After your
academic advisor's review of the attachments and signature on the application,
please bring five (5) copies of the application with required attachments
to Ms. Norden, Coordinator of Student Teaching in Physical Education (PW1
Room 306). Ms. Norden will determine if your application has been approved,
and if it has the following required attachments:
- Five (5) copies
of the original application signed by your advisor and Ms. Norden, Coordinator
of Student Teaching in Physical Education. Note: Arlington County requires
a separate application with lesson plan, letters of recommendation and
interview, along with transcripts, negative TB results, current resume
and autobiography.
- Five (5) unofficial
transcripts are required including undergraduate transcripts, which
will be sent to the school divisions with your application.
- Five (5) copies
of an autobiography, 2-3 pages typed, with your name on each page, which
is to be reviewed and edited by your advisor. This is your introduction
to the teacher(s), administrator(s), and university supervisor(s) with
whom you will be working. It should include your life history and what
led you to choose physical education as a profession.
- One (1) copy of
your PRAXIS I scores. You must submit scores for all three PRAXIS I
tests. Keep your original score reports. You must also submit a copy
to the departmental secretary in PW1 Room 303. You may NOT student teach
without having passed PRAXIS I at the time of submission of this application.
- Five (5) copies
of Negative TB test results within a year of the student teaching/internship.
Where: GMU Health Services (SUB I), public health departments, or from
your doctor. (Keep a personal copy.)
- Five (5) copies
of your current resume which should include Name, Permanent and Current
Addresses and Phone Numbers, Objective, Education Endorsements/Licensure,
Work Experience, Additional Skills or Training, Honors and Memberships,
and References. Arlington County requires five extra copies.
Step 3:
Enroll in PHED 415
during pre-registration for the subsequent semester. Remember: all required
course work must be completed before taking PHED 415.
Step 4:
Wait for notification
of your placements, which will be sent to you from the Office of Student
and Teacher Services by the end of the current semester.
Step 5:
Plan to take the Praxis
II: Specialty Area Test during your student teaching semester.
