The Department of Health, Fitness and Recreation Resources provides the opportunity for students to develop professional competencies in health education. Majors in BS Health, Fitness and Recreation Resources with a specialization in Exercise Science and Health Promotion would be eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist exam if they complete the following coursework:

Core Courses (9 credit hours)

HEAL 323 Implementation and Evaluation of Health, Fitness and Recreation Resources Programs

HEAL 430 Seminar on Contemporary Health Problems

HEAL 450 Epidemiology and Environmental Health

Content Courses plus two electives (16 hours)

HEAL 205 Principles of Accident Causation and Prevention

HEAL 220 Dimensions of Mental Health

HEAL 330 Nutrition

Elective Courses (Pick two)

HEAL 305 Teaching Methods in Health Education

HEAL 310 Drugs and Health

HEAL 312 Health and Wellness Choices

HEAL 314 Community Health Issues

HEAL 325 Health Aspects of Human Sexuality

HEAL 480 Special Topics in Health Education

HEAL 499 Independent Study in Health Education (must be 3 hours)

Internship (12-15)

HEAL 490 Internship (must be in a health education setting: community health agency, school/college health center, corporate health/fitness site, or wellness center in a health care organization)
