The HEP program was started January in 1983 with the guidance and support of George Mason University. The program has been running successfully since that time, providing health training for senior citizens in the local area. HEP provides an array of different activities as well as educational support opportunities. HEP works in cooperation with the Health, Fitness and Recreation Resources Department and the College of Nursing to bring the classroom to life for students. These departments take advantage of the Hepsters knowledge and life experiences to put into practice the theory they have learned in the classroom. The HEP program has approximately 30 participants on any given day.

Fitness Pays:
The benefits of regular exercise are no secret. Still, about 70 percent of older adults are inactive. That's despite research showing that older people-even those who have never exercised-can benefit from physical conditioning. Regular exercise can help prevent coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, depression and some cancers. Fitness reduces the lifestyle-limiting effects of osteoporosis and arthritis. Stronger arms and legs and better balance--all the result of fitness--help you carry grocery bags, get out of a bathtub or car and avoid falls. Being fit helps you remain independent as you age and improves the quality of your life.
You are encouraged to visit the National Institute on Aging at their web site www.nih.gov/nia to obtain publications on aging and excercise.
Senior Olympics:
HEP members participate in the Senior Olympics held in various Northern Virginia locations during September of each year. Competition is divided into five year age segments, i.e. ages 50-54, 55-60, 61-65, etc. Medals are awarded for first, second, and third places. Many events such as golf, swimming, pickle ball, tennis, dance, racquetball, track and field competition are available. Our HEP members do well as you can see from the photo: please click here.
