The Center for Global Studies (CGS) announces that it is now accepting applications from Mason faculty for the Fall 2008 cycle of its annual small research grants competition. Applications are due on October 31. This program is open to all full-time Mason faculty, so circulate to other colleagues who might be interested.

This program aims to provide support for new cutting-edge research that embodies the Center's multidiciplinary ethos and the intellectual vision of global studies by integrating the cultural, economic, political, technological, and scientific aspect of globalization. Applications from individuals and from small groups of faculty representing multiple academic units will both be considered.

Eligibility criteria and applications details are available online:

Individual Grants - http://cgs.gmu.edu/individual_grants.htm

If you have questions about the Center's research grant program, contact Anne O'Dell at aodell@gmu.edu.

Alumni Association Award Nominations

Each year the Alumni Association recognizes outstanding alumni, students, and faculty during their awards banquet, Celebration of Distinction, held in April. Through nominations the Alumni Association selects and recognizes one senior of the year, an alumnus/alumna of the year, a faculty member of the year and also presents an alumni service award. Consider nominating someone today.

Nominations are due no later than 5:00 pm on December 15. Nomination forms can be downloaded in Adobe Reader (pdf) format.

Faculty Member of the Year Award. Each year the Alumni Association recognizes one distinguished faculty member who exemplifies a commitment to scholarship, teaching, and service. Nominations are encouraged from students, alumni, and the campus community.

Senior of the Year Award. The only student award presented by the Alumni Association, the Senior of the Year Award, recognizes outstanding achievements and contributions to the university and community by a George Mason University senior.

Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Award. The Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Award is the most prestigious honor given by the Alumni Association. First given in 1976, the award is presented annually to alumni who exemplify the distinguished success of a George Mason University degree through their professional and personal achievements.

Alumni Service Award. The Alumni Service Award was established in 1989 and is given annually to an alumnus/alumna of George Mason University in recognition of his/her continuous and exceptional service to the university and the community at large.

For information about past recipients of these awards, visit the Alumni Association Awards website.

Erek Perry is Fall 2008 Outstanding Supervisor

The Staff Senate announces the recipient of the Fall 2008 Outstanding Supervisor award. The Senate received 12 nominations for this award, each accompanied by multiple letters of support. The nominating letters were rated according to specified criteria, and while all the letters were enthusiastic and persuasive, a winner has been chosen. The Outstanding Supervisor for Fall 2008 is Erek Perry, Director of the University Scholars Program in Student Academic Affairs

While there has to be a winner, being nominated is a tribute to each supervisor’s leadership skills and dedication to his or her employees. To honor that achievement, we would also like to take a moment to recognize all the nominees. They are:
• Julie Zobel, Executive Director, Environmental Health and Safety
• Jennifer Irvin, Consultant, Human Resources
• Lynn Wiley, Director, Kellar Institute for Human Disabilities
• Linda Harber, Associate Vice President, Human Resources & Payroll
• Renay Scales, Director, Multicultural Research and Resource Center
• John O’Connor, Director, Higher Education Program
• Krista Hughes, Director, Development Office
• Kathryn Jovancevic, Administrative Office Manager, University Police
• Rizna Ahmed, Assistant Director, Human Reources & Payroll

Coaching Corner: The Power of Sincere Praise

[A] reason managers don't recognize achievement is because they are not aware of the numerous forms of recognition at their disposal. Most managers believe the only forms of recognition that have any impact on the employee are raises, bonuses, or promotions. Managers do not realize that one of their major sources of recognition is the sounds that come out of their mouth directed to their employees, such as the following:

Thank you. It looks like a very good job.
I appreciate all your effort on that.
Thank you for working so hard to get this to me in the short time available.
You certainly seem to be a making a lot fewer errors than you used to.
I could never do it that well.

From Coaching for Improved Work Performance by Ferdinand F. Fournies. McGraw Hill. New York. 2000.

Because recognition is a cultural cornerstone at Mason, HR & Payroll's Reward & Recognition Team have lots of ways to help you say, Thanks for a job well done. Check them out at the Reward & Recognition website.

CVC is Underway

This year's theme for the annual Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC) is Give Hope: See What $2 per Pay Period Can Do. Pledge cards have been distributed to each mailstop. Mason's agency number is 247. The searchable directory of charities is available on line and, if you prefer, you can make your pledge online as well. Inter-office your completed pledge cards to Helga Yunker, MS 3C3, or drop them off at the CVC table on Faculty/Staff Enrichment Days on October 29 in Fairfax and October 31 in Prince William. All pledge cards collected will be entered into a monthly raffle in both October and November. Each month we will raffle off a certificate for 4 men's or women's basketball tickets, lunch for 2 at the Bistro and lunch for 2 at George's Restaurant.
