Faculty/Staff Office Decorating Competition for Homecoming

Offices are encouraged to decorate their area using the homecoming theme, Mason Rocks! Offices will be judged on Monday, February 11 and winners will be notified on February 12, followed by a picture in the Mason Gazette. Use of theme, spirit, and creativity are the key criteria. Prizes for the office competition include a plaque and a catered continental breakfast for up to 20 employees. To sign your office up to be judged, call Traci Claar at 993-8846, or email tclaar@gmu.edu by February 4.

 

Deadline for Outstanding Supervisor Award Extended

The deadline for submitting Outstanding Supervisor Award nominations has been extended to March 3 since Human Resources has postponed the Spring Outstanding Achievement Award Ceremony until May 6. This is your chance to give your supervisor the recognition he or she deserves. All staff members may nominate their supervisor by completing a nomination form and submitting three letters of support that describe how the supervisor meets the award criteria below, being as specific and thorough as possible.

Award criteria include:
• Creating a pleasant and productive work environment
• Being open to suggestions and ideas
• Recognizing and rewarding employee performance
• Being fair and flexible
• E
ncouraging professional growth of employees
• Acting as an advocate to his or her staff
• Providing a clear vision for the department
• Involving the staff in the goals of the department

Focus the Nation

Tuesday, January 29, 12:00 noon - 6:00 pm, Johnson Center, Dewberry Hall.

On January 31, over 1,000 universities, colleges, and high schools will hold educational programs and engage their political leaders regarding climate change (www.focusthenation.org). Due to scheduling conflicts, our event at Mason will be held on January 29, but our program is no less exciting, featuring talks by our own intellectual giants in climate change and guests Lester Brown (President of the Earth Policy Institute) and Lee Bodner (Executive Director of ecoAmerica).

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration

This year’s Black History Month celebration on the Fairfax campus will commence with a series of events over two days, January 30 and 31. This series titled The 2008 Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration (MLK Commemoration), is an opportunity for the campus and larger communities to reflect on the legacy of Dr. King. The theme for the commemoration is: Where Do We Go from Here: Making the Dream a Reality, and the intent is to illustrate the relevancy of Dr. King’s ideas as applied to contemporary issues in the lives of all participants.

Office of Research Development Workshops

Mentor/Trainee Relationships in the Research Essentials Series presented by Matt Kluger on February 12, 10:30 am - 11:30 am, Research I, Room 163. This session provides an overview of the responsibilities of mentors and trainees in pre-doctoral and post-doctoral research programs. It includes the role of a mentor, responsibilities of a mentor, conflicts between mentor and trainee, collaboration and competition, selection of a mentor, and abusing the mentor/trainee relationship.

Basics of Foundation Funding in the Basics Series presented by Ann McGuigan and Diane Coppage on February 13, 10:00 am - 11:30 am, Research I, Room 163. This session answers the most frequently asked questions about foundation funding. What is a private foundation? What do foundations do and how do they do it? Which one is right for me? Who can help me get my grant? And more...

Collaboration Science/Scholarship in the Research Essentials Series presented by Matt Kluger on February 19, 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm, Research I, Room 163. This session focuses on research collaborations and issues that may arise from such collaborations. Topics include setting ground rules early in collaboration, avoiding authorship disputes, and the sharing of materials and information with internal and external collaborating scientists.

Men's and Women's Basketball

Men's Basketball will host VCU in a nationally televised game; Women's Hoops will host Pack the House Day.

The Mason men's basketball will face CAA rival VCU on Tuesday, January 29 at 7:00 pm in the Patriot Center. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Tickets ($14-adult, $8-senior & $6-youth) are still available at the Patriot Center Box Office or at www.ticketmaster.com. All fans are encouraged to wear Gold to the game. Come out on Sunday, February 3 to support the Mason women's basketball team in the NCAA/Colonial Athletic Association Pack the House Challenge. Mason will be competing against schools in our conference to see who can bring in the most fans. So make sure you mark your calendars for Pack the House on February 3 when the women’s team hosts VCU at two o’clock. Dell Computer Briefing

Representatives from Dell Computer will be presenting the company's road map for desktop and laptop computers and for servers. They will also speak on Dell's Green strategies which includes the Plant a Tree program and details on Energy Star and Energy Smart features.

The briefing will be held on Friday February 8 at 9:30 am, Johnson Center, Room A. The agenda is provided so that people can attend any of the session(s) of interest.

Eldercare Seminar: Eldercare Mediation. If you need to get on the same page with your elder loved one or your adult children, join Jeannette Twomey, J.D., from Mediation Works, as she discusses mediation as it relates to eldercare on Wednesday, February 6 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm, Mason Hall, Room D3 A & B.

New SUPERvisor Series: Dealing with Different People. All Mason supervisors are invited to join Julia Morelli as she discusses strategies for dealing with people who are different or difficult. This workshop will take place on Thursday, February 7 from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, SUB II, Rooms 1 & 2.

Mason Investment Series: Supplementing your Retirement Savings with Fidelity. Join Christopher Greenlaw of Fidelity Investments as he discusses how to determine an appropriate asset allocation, how to apply that strategy to your workplace savings plan, and provides techniques for rebalancing your account. This workshop will take place on Friday, February 8 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm, SUB II, Rooms 1 & 2.
