University Mall Parking Restrictions - Towing Enforced Without Notice

Effective immediately the University Mall Management Company has a tow policy in effect and is enforcing it without warning. The management company has spotters in the parking lots looking for Mason faculty, staff and students who leave their cars at the mall and walk to campus. These vehicles are immediately towed to Henry's Wrecker Service in Fairfax and stored until the owners pay the $100 tow/storage fee. Staff and visitors to the Mason offices at Patriot Square (Safety Office, Laboratory Safety, Patriot Club/Athletics, Sponsored Programs, Internal Audit, Budget and IRR) are reminded to park in the Patriot Square parking lots. For more information contact the Safety Office at 993-2479.

Help Your Students Write Right--Schedule In-Class Writing Center Roadshow

Writing Center tutors are available to visit your class for 10 minutes to introduce your students to our services. If you or your students would be interested in such a presentation, send an email to Sarah Baker at sbaker@gmu.edu. Include the name/number of your course, the preferred date and time you would like us to visit, and your classroom location. Roadshows are available in Fairfax and at select times in Arlington and Prince William. The presentation requires an overhead projector.

We also hope you will include the Writing Center URL http://writingcenter.gmu.edu/ on your syllabus and mention us in your class. Our web site includes many helpful resources and we now have online scheduling for appointments.

Mason Dining Specials

In appreciation of your loyalty and patronage, Mason Dining once again will extend the faculty and staff Ciao Hall special lunch price to Monday through Friday through the first 4 weeks of the semester (through Friday, February 10). After that date, the faculty staff special days will again be Tuesdays and Thursdays.

On January 30, take the advantage to visit Ciao Hall at lunchtime for Cuisine of the Lunar New Year.

As always, questions and comments are welcome, and can be directed to Michael at mgalvin@gmu.edu.

Fiscal Year Closing Schedule and Deadlines

It's hard to believe, but yes it is time to start the fiscal year closing process for FY '06. Departments should begin planning their remaining fiscal year 2006 purchases and/or payments to ensure that supplies, equipment, and services paid from Educational and General (E&G) funds are delivered and paid for by the June 30.

Every attempt will be made to process all requirements as they are submitted. Items with longer lead-time should be submitted immediately in order to guarantee being charged to this fiscal year's budget. It is recommended that you do not wait until the deadline date to begin submitting your requisitions.

HR/Payroll News

Winter Doldrums Award. With the holidays and New Year's behind us, winter can be a bit challenging for employees - our bodies and minds are ready for warmer weather, but Mother Nature isn't. What to do? Don't let folks hibernate, waiting for spring to arrive. Instead, reward your classified employees with a ½ day off Winter Doldrums bonus award. Employees who have a solid achiever performance evaluation or above and no more than 5 days of recognition leave are eligible. Visit hr.gmu.edu/awards for more information, or contact Lucy Cummings at 993-2739.

During this time, there will be short closures of individual entrances, but no more that one entrance will be closed at any one time. Use caution and obey any posted closures. Two Performances of Mark Morris Dance Group

A Mark Morris Dance Group performance means many things, among them, says The Washington Post, “beautiful movement, beautiful music, presented in unbroken harmony that feels as natural as breathing.” Mark Morris and his talented ensemble continue the tradition of excellence begun over 25 years ago with two highly anticipated appearances at the Center for the Arts on February 10 and 11 at 8:00 pm

The program for both evenings includes 1995’s Somebody’s Coming to See Me Tonight, danced to Stephen Foster melodies; Rhymes With Silver, the 1997 major achievement” (according to New York Magazine), set to a commissioned score by Lou Harrison; and From Old Seville, a flamenco tour de force, featuring Mark Morris in an over-the-top mating dance sure to elicit grins from both fans and neophytes.

A pre-performance discussion – on the Grand Tier of the Concert Hall – is held at 7:15 pm on both evenings.

Tickets are $44, $36 and $22. Charge by phone at 888-945-2468, or visit www.tickets.com.
