| Recruitment Underway as Mason Prepares for Public Health Emergencies George Mason University, in cooperation with the Fairfax County Health Department, has launched a major recruitment drive to staff the Fairfax Medical reserve Corp (MRC), a program of the Fairfax County Citizen Corp. More than 13,000 medical and non-medical volunteers are needed to respond to a full scale public health emergency in Fairfax County. “Our goal is to have a trained volunteer force ready to help us respond to a public health emergency affecting Fairfax County and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church.” said Gloria Addo-Ayensu, M.D., M.P.H., health director. In the event of a bioterrorism attack or a naturally occurring epidemic, MRC volunteers would be called upon to staff vaccination or medication dispensing sites. In a worst case scenario, this could mean providing for all residents of Fairfax - more than one million people – in three to five days. To accomplish this, 96 teams, comprising 142 people per team, would staff dispensing sites at all county public high schools and George Mason University. In addition to medical health care professionals, a large number of non-medical volunteers are needed to provide general support, such as assisting patients with forms, performing data entry, translating and other administrative tasks. “While the name of the program is the Medical Reserve Corp, we clearly need non-medical volunteers to provide critical support,” said Donna Foster, Fairfax MRC coordinator. As a member of the George Mason community we urge you to get involved by joining the MRC. The registration site and more information about the program can be found at www.fairfaxmrc.org. While at the site you will be asked to provide contact information and specific qualifications. Be sure to check the Mason box. For more specific information contact Keith Cunningham at 993-3375. | ||

Back problems are the most common physical complaint among American adults. A back injury is not to be taken lightly. The following suggestions are provided to help you avoid injuring your back: 1. When sitting, keep your back straight and your knees level with or slightly higher than your hips. 2. Stand and walk tall with an upright posture, chin tucked in and pelvis slightly forward. 3. Sleep on a firm mattress, on your back with a pillow under your knees. When sleeping on your side, bend your knees slightly and place a pillow between them. 4. Avoid lifting objects above your head if at all possible. Use a stepladder or stepstool so you can grab objects and set them down at shoulder level or lower. 5. Do stretches and exercises to increase your flexibility and strengthen the muscles you use for lifting. 6. When lifting something heavy, lift slowly and steadily, using your legs, and not your back. 7. Avoid twisting as you lift. Keep your head up. If you injure your back, check with your medical advisor as to appropriate treatment. Additional information on protecting your back can be found by searching the National Institute of Health web site at: http://www.nih.gov/.
