Women Architectural Writers and Critics Exhibit

Fenwick Library Atrium, 2nd Floor
Curator: Adriana Ercolano of the University Libaries' Events and Exhibits Team

In Commemoration of Women's History Month, the Libraries have mounted an exhibit featuring women architectural writers and critics. Many of these women may never have considered themselves critics, per se, but rather simply used writing as a vehicle to be heard on topics they passionately believed in: Catherine Beecher on the education of young women in the domestic arts; Mariana van Rensselaer on American homes and European cathedrals, Theodora Kimball Hubbard on landscapes and urban design, and Catherine Bauer on housing policy.

Contained in the exhibit are materials from the University Libraries' general collection as well as Special Collections & Archives, including:

  • Beecher, Catherine. A Treatise on Domestic Economy. (Boston: Marsh, Capon, Lyon, & Webb, 1841). [Special Collections & Archives]
  • Hubbard, Theodora Kimball. Manual of Information on Planning and Zoning. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1923). [Special Collections & Archives]
  • Huxtable, Ada Louise. The Tall Building Artistically Reconsidered. (New York: Pantheon Books, 1984). [General Collection]
  • Van Rensselaer, Mariana. Henry Hobson Richardson and His Works. (Boston: Houghton, Mifflin & Co., 1888). [Special Collections & Archives]

The exhibit will be up the entire month of March.

For more information on the exhibit, contact Kelly Jordan at kjordan2@gmu.edu, or 993-3712.
