Over the past two decades, there has been remarkable progress in the field of diagnostic ultrasound imaging. Functional imaging capability is increasingly augmenting the safety, portability and real-time nature of ultrasound, making this an attractive complement to other imaging modalities both for clinical applications as well as for basic science research. In this talk, I will describe some new applications of ultrasound imaging that utilize the ability to non-invasively measure sub-micrometer tissue displacements with sub-millisecond temporal resolution. Potential neurovascular applications will also be discussed.
