Cheryl A. Moore

Cheryl A. Moore is Chief Operating Officer at the Institute’s Janelia Farm Research Campus of Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The campus was completed in mid-2006, and is located on the Potomac River about 30 miles from Washington, D.C. Janelia Farm currently employs approximately 250 people conducting research on neuronal circuits and creating imaging tools. Ms. Moore is responsible for all operational aspects of the campus.

Prior to joining HHMI in March 2004, Ms. Moore was Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at The Burnham Institute, a private $60 million nonprofit biomedical research institute focusing on cancer and neurological disorders in La Jolla, California. Ms. Moore has previously held leadership roles as Vice President-Strategic Relations, Vice President-National Contracting, and Vice President-Finance in various healthcare companies, and was a certified public accountant at Deloitte & Touche LLP.

Ms. Moore is active in community and industry activities, serving on numerous boards and civic organizations. Ms. Moore has been actively involved in the Association of Independent Research Institutes for the past eight years and in 2006 was elected to the Board. She is currently a member of the Board of the Virginia Biotechnology Association, a non-profit organization that promotes the life sciences industry in Virginia. In 2006 she was appointed by the Governor of Virginia as a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park Authority. Ms. Moore currently serves as Membership Chair for the Virginia Biotechnology Association and was on the Steering Committee for the 2007 Mid-Atlantic BIO Annual Meeting. Ms. Moore was also appointed by the Virginia Secretary of Technology to serve on the Grant Allocation Committee of the Commonwealth Technology Research Fund. Ms. Moore serves as an Appointed Advisory Member on the Loudoun County Economic Development Commission. Ms. Moore was recently named as one of the top 25 “Woman Who Mean Business” for 2007 by the Washington Business Journal. Previously, Ms. Moore served on the boards of the Burnham Institute, the University of San Diego School of Accountancy, and the Healthcare Financial Managers Association. Ms. Moore served as a member of the Executive Committee and as Academic Chair for the international biotech meeting BIO2001 and as a Steering Committee Member for the formation of the San Diego Regional Cancer Institute. She also served as Program Committee Chair for Athena’s Bioscience Group, a group of executives in the technology industries, from 2002-2004. Ms. Moore has been nominated as a recipient of the 2008 Athena Pinnacle Award, honoring women who strive to forge paths of leadership for other women to follow. Ms. Moore was previously active in the following San Diego-based organizations: BIOCOM, the Economic Development Corporation’s Quality of Life, Housing and Infrastructure Committee, and the Corporate Director’s Forum.
