Ted Townsend
Ted Townsend is owner and president of Townsend Vision, Inc., a private company created to secure and enhance the future of several complementary, humanistic endeavors. The first of these are Great Ape Trust of Iowa, (founder), Earthpark, (founder) and the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy. They all derive from a view of life formed by travel, reading, listening, and personal experience. Each focuses on a global need, grounded in science, and dedicated to truth, learning, hope, and love.
The resources available are primarily the proceeds from sale of his family business Townsend Engineering Company, founded in 1946 by his father, Ray Townsend. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, 1948, Ted graduated from Lincoln High School in 1966, and the University of Iowa in 1971 with a degree in finance. While serving six years in the National Guard, he joined Townsend full time, eventually as president from 1978 to 2001.
Ted has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, and in 1996 placed the Iowa flag at the North Pole. He currently is on the boards of the institutions mentioned above, as well as the Business Education Alliance, Studio Art Centers International, Greater Des Moines Community Foundation, and director emeritus, Iowa Scholarship Fund.
