Government Opportunities

Numerous School of Law students, alumni, and adjunct professors work in federal, state, and local government positions.  Students interested in learning more about the work government attorneys do should contact the Career Development and Alumni Services office for a listing of alumni in various government positions.  Students looking for summer or permanent positions with federal government agencies should visit their web pages, which contain extremely helpful information about job openings and when and how to apply.  Students should be aware that some federal agencies only hire summer law clerks or entry-level attorneys through their "honors programs."  Students interested in positions with the DC government should review the job postings in the Washington Post and on www.usajobs.com.  The Virginia Lawyer's Weekly publishes job announcements for positions with the Virginia government, including jobs with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office and the Public Defender's Office.  Many federal and state government entities recruit on-campus during Fall and Spring Recruiting, and students are encouraged to check the listings of participants in those programs.
