Mason University Foundation Professor of Law Ernest Gellhorn
died on Saturday, May 7, 2005 in Washington, D.C. He was
70. Professor Gellhorn was an internationally
recognized authority on antitrust and administrative law
who joined the law school faculty in 1995.
Prior to coming to George Mason, Professor Gellhorn was
a partner at Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue and also had
a distinguished academic career as a law professor at Duke
and the University of Virginia and as the law school dean
at Arizona State University, the University of Washington,
and Case Western Reserve. He authored over 100 scholarly
articles and published books in administrative law, government
regulation and antitrust law. In his practice, he argued
cases on administrative law before Federal appellate courts,
including the U.S. Supreme Court. He also served as a public
member of the Administrative Conference of the United States,
chaired its Rulemaking Committee from 1986 to 1995, and
served as Chair of the Section of Administrative Law and
Regulatory Practice of the American Bar Association. He
received his B.A. and LL.B. from the University of Minnesota.
