Mr. Clyde L. Hughes, Jr. is currently Professor of Brass Studies and Conductor of the Symphonic Band at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. He is also Director of Bands Emeritus of Hermitage High School, Henrico County (Richmond), VA, where for 30 years his bands consistently received superior performance ratings in wind ensemble, concert band, field show and parade, and jazz ensemble throughout the United States and Canada.
Mr. Hughes is in demand as a guest conductor for university, professional, all-county and all-district/regional bands, has conducted throughout Europe, and served as guest conductor with the International Trumpet Guild conference. He serves as well as adjudicator & clinician for marching band and concert band festivals in the US & Canada. He is currently an adjudicator for North American Music Festivals, Carlisle, PA. He is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Virginia Music Educators Association, Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors Association, National Band Association, and an elected member to Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity for which he currently serves as President of the Virginia state chapter, Alpha Chi. He is also an elected member of the Festival of States Band Directors Hall of Fame in St. Petersburg, Florida. In 2001 he became the 5th director in Virginia named to the VBODA Band Directors Honor Roll. He is a past Henrico County, VA, Music Educator of the Year, and Jaycees Educator of the Year. He is the recipient of the National Band Association Citation of Excellence for outstanding contributions to bands and band music.
In August 2000, Mr. Hughes retired as a lieutenant colonel from the United States Army Reserve with maximum years (28) service where he served as both company & battalion commander, and division staff officer. He is a graduate of the United States Army Adjutant General Corps School, Infantry School, and Command & General Staff College. His awards included the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and three Meritorious Service Medals.
