Audition Requirements

2008-2009 Entrance Auditions:

Students typically pick 2-3 pieces that can showcase a wide variety of technique, lyricism, and range of the instrument. Please contact the Faculty Area Coordinator in your respective area for more information. A list of faculty members can be found here.

2008-2009 Graduate Exams:

  • April 19, 2008- Comprehensive Exit Exams for those students who have filed their intent to graduate Spring '08. Please email your exam reservation to Karen Clark Evans.
  • May 3, 2008- Placement Exam for newly admitted MM students who wish to register for Summer '08 classes.
  • August 18, 2008- Placement Exam for newly admitted MM students entering Fall '08.

Fall 2007 Choral Ensemble Auditions:

Auditions will be held on Thursday, August 23, from 2:30-6:00pm and Friday, August 24, from 9:30am-3:30pm, in the Performing Arts Building, Room 323, or contact the choral faculty in advance of the upcoming semester. Singers are accepted throughout the first two weeks of class, but best consideration is given to those who audition early. There will be a sign-up sheet outside the audition room.

Please have prepared: 16 bars of your choice (an accompanist will be provided), sight singing, and tonal memory.

Fall 2007 Instrumental Ensemble Auditions:

Auditions for Woodwind, Brass and Percussion players auditioning for Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Ensemble will take place on Tuesday, August 28 and Wednesday, August 29 from 3:00-7:00pm in PAB room 336. Unless specifically assigned music excerpts are required by your major studio teacher (listed below) , auditions will consist of the following material:

  1. A short solo or etude of your own choice demonstrating slow, lyrical, melodic playing ability
  2. A short solo or etude of your own choice demonstrating fast, technical, articulated playing ability
  3. A brief sightreading etude supplied at the audition
  4. Major and Minor scales (if time permits)
