Editorial Assistant Internships

Assist in the day-to-day management of VoxPop, an award-winning features magazine, where having an editorial internship means more than answering phones.

VoxPop's editorial intern handles everything from the high-flying concept to its nitty-gritty execution. In a typical day, the editorial intern will come up with story ideas, assess incoming copy, dole out assignments to writers and photographers, and set up interviews on campus and around town.

The intern works 10 hours weekly. The position is unpaid. The intern will receive a listing on the magazine’s masthead, ten copies of the magazine to distribute to future employers or graduate schools, a copy of the position description, and a reference.

The position duties are divided as follows.

35% Serve as production assistant. Includes:
* Notifying photographers, writers, editors, and designers of upcoming
assignments and events, as directed by Editor;
* Updating production budget (story assignments and schedules) as directed by Editor;
* Assisting Editor in university and community story inquiries; and
* Notifying Student Media advisors of potential updates to Student Media
website.

35% Develop writers’ skills. Includes:
* Reading incoming copy and collaborating with editors to identify areas for
development across the writing staff;
* Acting as a liaison to Student Media advisors, communicating writing
development needs concisely and clearly; and
* Co-leading one writing workshop.

20% Contribute to editorial decisions. Includes:
* Researching relevant fields (as assigned) in order to contribute
meaningfully to discussions; and
* Meeting with editors and Student Media advisors biweekly to discuss
editorial direction and journal progress.

10% Maintain journal’s office presence. Includes:
* Responding to email and voicemail queries; and
* Searching for distribution opportunities and delivering copies as needed.
