Description
The Fairfax County Park Authority is announcing a Conservation Internship opportunity.

We are seeking five (5) highly motivated college students to be part of the stewardship team (more positions may be available) . A "can-do" attitude will help rescue our 24,000+ acres of parkland from a host of different invasive, non-native plants such as English ivy and kudzu. The paid internship will last ten (10) weeks, this summer from May through August. Fairfax County, Virginia, located near Washington, D.C. is located in the mid-Atlantic and contains both Piedmont and Coastal Plain habitats. Parkland ranges in size from several thousand acres to less than 1/2 an acre, which allows an exploration of both the concepts of urban fragmentation and large-scale protected habitats in natural resource management.

Writing Internships at VoxPop

Write for VoxPop, an award-winning features magazine, and see what happens when good writing matters.

VoxPop's interns write full-throttle. They write and rewrite and are given the freedom and the credibility to shake our readers to the bones. Writers collaborate with editorial staff to hone story ideas; they do interviews; they master the mechanics of a good story and their own authorial voices.

The intern works 10 hours weekly and receives three credit hours through New Century College. The position is unpaid. The intern will receive a listing on the magazine’s masthead, ten copies of the magazine to distribute to future employers or graduate schools, a copy of the position description, and a reference.

Send a resume and a writing sample of 500 to 750 words to stumedia@gmu.edu by Friday, December 14. The writing sample should consist of any essay written for any class. Choose the piece you feel represents you best. Call Reba Elliott at 703.993.3560 with questions.


The position duties are divided as follows.

20% Develop story ideas with Editor and Editorial Intern. Includes:
* Meeting with editorial staff as required to discuss issue foci;
* Identifying topics on- and off-campus that explore issue foci;
* Deciding what aspect of on- and off-campus topics would make a quality story; and
* Relaying shape of final story to editorial staff.

20% Research stories. Includes:
* Conducting background research;
* Performing interviews; and
* Contacting sources.

50% Write solid, readable stories. Includes:
* Evincing a firm handling of mechanics;
* Structuring the story to highlight features integral to it;
* Employing a unique authorial voice; and
* Rewriting and revising as necessary.

10% Meet with Editorial Intern and advisor. Includes:
* Discussing story structure and mechanics; and
* Revising story.

Editorial Assistant Internships

Assist in the day-to-day management of VoxPop, an award-winning features magazine, where having an editorial internship means more than answering phones.

VoxPop's editorial intern handles everything from the high-flying concept to its nitty-gritty execution. In a typical day, the editorial intern will come up with story ideas, assess incoming copy, dole out assignments to writers and photographers, and set up interviews on campus and around town.

The intern works 10 hours weekly. The position is unpaid. The intern will receive a listing on the magazine’s masthead, ten copies of the magazine to distribute to future employers or graduate schools, a copy of the position description, and a reference.

* Notifying photographers, writers, editors, and designers of upcoming
assignments and events, as directed by Editor;
* Updating production budget (story assignments and schedules) as directed by Editor;
* Assisting Editor in university and community story inquiries; and
* Notifying Student Media advisors of potential updates to Student Media
website.

35% Develop writers’ skills. Includes:
* Reading incoming copy and collaborating with editors to identify areas for
development across the writing staff;
* Acting as a liaison to Student Media advisors, communicating writing
development needs concisely and clearly; and
* Co-leading one writing workshop.

20% Contribute to editorial decisions. Includes:
* Researching relevant fields (as assigned) in order to contribute
meaningfully to discussions; and
* Meeting with editors and Student Media advisors biweekly to discuss
editorial direction and journal progress.

10% Maintain journal’s office presence. Includes:
* Responding to email and voicemail queries; and
* Searching for distribution opportunities and delivering copies as needed.

2008 SUMMER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The IRTS Summer Fellowship Program teaches up-and-coming communicators the realities of the media industry and business world through a nine-week, expense-paid fellowship, which includes practical experience and career-planning advice. Fellows gain full-time "real world" experience at New York-based media companies. In addition, the Fellowship provides the opportunity to network with industry
professionals, take related field trips, and attend panels, lectures, and group discussions.
