Court Mediation Schedule

Resources for
ICAR Students

An Important ICAR Student Resource for over 15 Years
NVMS got it's start at ICAR during 1988-1990. Many people were involved in starting NVMS including ICAR students/graduates Susan Shearouse and Bob Reed, ICAR professors, Rich Rubenstein, Joe Scimeca and Chris Mitchell and Conflict Clinic staff Frank Blechman, John Murray and Bill Potapchuk.

Initially, NVMS was established as a division of the Conflict Clinic, an ICAR affiliate involved in resolving public policy type disputes. The first class of mediators trained by NVMS in 1989 was made up almost entirely of ICAR students and graduates. Later, in 1990, NVMS was incorporated as a nonprofit organization and received a grant from the Virginia Law Foundation to hire it's first executive director, Ramona Buck, another ICAR graduate.

The first board of directors included Delegate Jim Dillard (still the NVMS Board Chair), an ICAR advisory board member for many years, Susan Shearouse, ICAR Graduate and advisory board member and Chester Myslicki, long time ICAR auditing student.

Research
NVMS has a lot of data and we have a couple of interesting research projects in mind. These could be ideal for an ICAR student who is attending or has
completed Quantitative Methods. The student would help us design the
study, cull the data and analyze the results which could probably be published. Not only could this help contribute to the development of the field, but it might also be helpful as a project for the QM class and for those interested in developing a record of publication. Contact Rob Scott at NVMS if you are interested in exploring this further.

Training Discount Rules & Restrictions
Basically, full-time ICAR students can get 50% off the registration fee. But, there are some conditions, rules and exceptions:
  • First, you have to actually request the discount. NVMS will not automatically figure out who qualifies for a discount. Also, we cannot retroactively give a discount because we calculate up the training proceeds and pay the trainers based on how much we took in.
  • The FULL price is before the $50 early registration discount. In our catalog, we have two prices (eg. $395/$445). In that example the discount would be 50% off the FULL price of $445 or $227.50.
  • If the FULL price is $100 then the discount is $50 and that is the same as what everyone else will pay if they register early. So there is really only a discount for registration fees over $100. The principle here is that a student can get only 1 discount.
  • Only full time active students qualify for the discount. If the student is part-time, there is no discount. Active means: attending classes in the current semester or, if the workshop is being held during the summer or semester break, registering for classes during the following semester.
  • The discount doesn't apply to observations and co-mediations needed for Virginia certification. These are full price unless the ICAR student has taken the NVMS 20 hour mediation skills class, in which case
    observations and co-mediations are free (depending on availability).
  • All discounts are on a space available basis. That means that if the workshop is overbooked or wait-listed, we can elect to bump the student with a discount and fill the seat with a full-paying trainee.
  • NVMS also reserves the right to limit the number of discounted seats or not have discounts for any particular workshop and to make changes to this discount policy at any time.

Internships & Part-time Jobs
ICAR students are encouraged to sign up for internships and part-time employment positions. Internship inquiries are always welcome. Employment positions are posted to the NVMS web site and/or listed on the ICAR listservs. Interns and
employees may take training without cost during their internship or period of employment (subject to NVMS discretion). Internships can be negotiated and range from general office help to program administration to project
development. Of course ICAR students receive a preference when we are selecting employees and interns.

Mediation Clinic Class
From time to time, ICAR will offer a 1 or 2 credit skills class in mediation in which students do supervised co-mediation of court cases (for experience, "live" practice and certification). Usually registration is limited to ICAR majors and to 8-10 students and such classes fill up early. Students will need to have mediation skills or CONF 713 as a pre-requisite. See the full class description below.

How Can NVMS Help You?
NVMS tries to help when asked. We're not always able to help, but NVMS has great connections in the mediation
community and we are always willing to help students if we can - for example by helping facilitate access to mediators for a survey, finding a mediator with a particular skill set or background to answer questions, identifying an appropriate speaker or presenter for a group, class or
project, etc.

Workshop Discounts
Full-time ICAR students receive a 50% discount on most NVMS training programs. See the official Rules & Restrictions.

Internships
ICAR students are given a preference for any intern slots NVMS has available. Students can select from a range of posted internships or work with the director to design a project that works best for them.

Part-time Employment
Check out our Employment web page for any jobs we have posted. We also post these to the ICAR listservs and give preference, whenever possible, to ICAR students or graduates.

Research Projects
We've got some ideas for quantitative research studies using our collected data! See more info on this.

CONF 795 - Mediation Clinic (1 credit) - Spring 2005

Prerequisites: This class is open to admitted ICAR degree candidates. Class size is limited to 10 students due to availability of cases and weeks in the semester. Students should already have completed mediation training such as some versions of CONF 713 and/or a mediation skills workshop.

Class Description: Students further develop their mediation and client relations skills through clinical practice activities that focus on:

     1) the practical aspects of on-site "day of trial" court mediation;
     2) observing and practicing a variety of mediation styles and interventions;
     3) methodologies for facilitating and recording that maximize constructive client participation;
     4) the observation of one or more mediation cases and mediators;
     5) post-mediation discussions among the observers and mediators;
     6) the co-mediation of two or more cases; and,
     7) beginning to develop a reflective practice approach through participation in peer case-consultation.
     8) further developing an understanding of the relationship between theory and practice through a short paper based on prior readings from other classes and mediation experiences gained in this class.

Non-traditional class hours:
The class will involve three classroom sessions and three to five mediation sessions. The three classes will be held on Friday afternoons from 4:30-7:10pm on January 28, March 11 and May 6, 2005. Mediation sessions are scheduled each Friday morning from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Fairfax County Courthouse.

Mediation Sessions:
A sign-up sheet will be distributed at the first class to schedule mediation sessions. The sign-up sheet will be similar to the Court Mediation Schedule posted online. You can use this sheet to pre-plan your calendar and identify ALL dates you will be available during the semester.

Virginia Certification: Cases will also qualify for Virginia Mediator Certification but other requirements and pre-requisites must also be met. Information about Virginia Certification will be discussed at the first class and students are encouraged to discuss this issue with the instructor at any time before, during or after this class.
