"keeping
the Doors Open" Community Mediation Program
"Keeping the Doors Open" is our free community
mediation program. Lot's of police officers have found that
they can help resolve non-criminal citizen complaints by
referring them to mediation. We use trained mediators and
try to meet in a neutral location near the parties' homes
- such as a library, police station, government office,
etc. Typical cases involve such things as parking, noise,
trees and boundary lines, common driveways, behavior of
children, and a host of other issues which frustrate people
but which are not criminal in nature. Officers can call
us at 703-993-3656 any time to refer citizens to mediation
or discuss the program with our staff. Citizens can also
be referred by using one of our referral forms and faxing
it to us at 703-993-3551.
Roll
Call & Staff Presentations
We've done a lot of police roll call presentations and
answered questions about our community mediation program
but there's still a lot more to go. Call us if you would
like us to come out and give a short (5-10min) presentation
during roll call or other County staff meeting or community
meeting.

NVMS
/ Police Partnernship
NVMS has been working with community
agencies and leaders for fifteen years. FCPS Deputy Chief
Suzanne Devlin has been on the NVMS Board of Directors for
many years. More recently, Larry Moser who was formerly working
with the Chief, was the liason to NVMS to help get this program
off the ground. With his help, we were able to launch this
program in 2002 and have mediated many community cases since
then.
"Fight
Nice" Pocket Brochures Available
We have developed this great pocket sized brochure specifically
for police and staff to have available and hand out to
disputing neighbors and citizens. We have stocked most
FCPS district stations with our mini/pocket-sized brochure "Fight
Nice." Let us know and we'll send some out to
your location.
