This workshop explores the impact of criminal thinking errors on the ability of the criminogenic substance abusing offender to effect recovery. Particular attention is paid to the clash of criminal values and the values held by the population at large. While all thinking errors identified in The Criminal Personality are briefly mentioned, the focus is on some 17 of the most commonly observed. Particular attention is given to” Zero State” thinking as well as the criminal’s need for excitement and inability to tolerate ”Zero State” for any appreciable length of time without violating through drug use. By gaining a better understanding of the interrelationship of criminal thinking and substance abuse, counselors will be able to construct interventions that will lead to more favorable treatment outcomes as well as decrease the likelihood of relapse to either substance abuse or crime.
Michael Lenahan has over 29 years experience working with substance abusers. He began his career while serving active duty in the United States Navy in the area of prevention. In 1976 his career turned toward providing direct services to drug dependent clients in a Navy residential treatment center. In 1980, Mr. Lenahan ran a drug-counseling center for the Navy in Alaska, then returned to an inpatient setting for the Marines at Quantico, Virginia in 1983. Following his retirement from the Navy in 1986, Mr. Lehahan was employed as Family Program Manager at Mountain Wood in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 1988 he became the clinical coordinator for a hospital-based Chemical Dependency Program in Fredericksburg, Virginia. In 1993, he began to work with clients in the Virginia prison system. In January 2001, he became the Training and Development Coordinator for substance abuse services with the VA Department of Corrections at the Academy for Staff Development. Mr. Lehahan holds a BA in psychology from St. Leo’s College, he is certified as an addiction counselor, clinical supervisor, and a criminal justice addiction counselor by the Virginia ICRC affiliate SACAVA. The Commonwealth of Virginia also certifies him as a substance abuse counselor.
