GRADUATE COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES

Graduate Council meetings are held monthly, August through May, in Mason Hall Room D5, from 1:30-3:00. See schedule for exact dates. All meetings are open to the general George Mason University community.

I. Call to order

    Provost Stearns called the meeting to order at 1:35 p.m.

II. Approval of February Minutes and the Special Meeting Minutes

    A. Minutes of the February 18, 2004 meeting were approved as written.

    B. The minutes of the March 1, 2004 special meeting were amended as noted:

    The Ph.D. in Computational Social Science (Revised) was approved provided that the changes noted at the February 18 Grad Council meeting are included in the final version of the proposal. Additionally, the Council changed the language of item 4 (of the changes) to read "the program is a joint program among units."

III. Announcements

    A. Provost Stearns informed the Council that five new degree programs were approved by SCHEV on March 16. The new programs are: M.A. in Arts Management, M.A. in Philosophy, Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Ph.D. in Physical Sciences, and the B.A./B.S. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution.

    B. The Provost stated that the Budget Committee will be proposing a summer school tuition rate which, for instate graduate students (tuition and fees) will increase approximately 5.3 % for the summer. A decision with respect to the fall tuition rates will be made in May.

    C. Linda Schwartzstein informed Council members that the CNHS Curriculum Committee has approved the doctoral dissertation requirements to be in concert with university requirements with respect to minimum 12 with NURS 998 and 999.

    D. Linda Schwartzstein provided Council members with a handout prepared by the Registrar's Office on a new rule regarding full-time status for doctoral dissertation students.

    E. Linda Schwartzstein gave Council members a draft of the Guidelines For Interdisciplinary Programs That Involve More Than One Academic Unit.

IV. Old Business

    A. Peter Becker told Council members that he was working with the Geography Department to work out any problems with the SCS courses approved by Graduate Council on February 18, 2004.

    A. David Rossell discussed graduate student funding sources for Fall 2004.

    B. Jevita deFreitas discussed graduate tuition waivers, and reviewed proposed changes to procedures for reporting and posting tuition waivers.
