IV. Discussion Items

    A. Proposed Policy on Electronic Theses and Dissertations (John Zenelis)

    • Proposal
    • MARS Agreement

    • John Zenelis and Robert Vay discussed a proposal by the University Libraries to institute and maintain an electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) program for Mason.

After some discussion, Council members agreed that students should have the right to opt out of the program. The Provost suggested that a policy statement with the change recommended by Council be submitted at a later date for Council’s approval.

    B. Content Proposal for a Graduate Certificate Program Building Terrorism Resistant Societies (Provost Stearns)

Provost Stearns asked for Council feedback on two questions pertaining to a certificate program currently under development: (1) Should the interdisciplinary program should be housed in individual units or report to the Provost Office directly or through the Center for Global Studies? (2) Should there be a new course designation for newly developed courses or should existing designations be used?

Daniel Menasce informed Council members that he had just returned from a meeting of the committee developing the certificate program and that the general consensus was that there would not be one certificate.  He also stated that there are many questions still to be resolved before the certificate program would be sent to Council for approval.

Andrew Flagel stated that marketing for the certificate program would not be a problem but Banner could not accommodate one certificate program across several units.
Provost Stearns thanked Council members for their comments. No action is required at this time.
