UPDATED! The Global Affairs Major Worksheet provides a checklist of courses required in the major. To earn a B.A. in Global Affairs, students must complete at least 120 credits, of which at least 45 must be in upper-level courses (numbered 300 and above). Global Affairs majors must fulfill the University General Education Requirements. They do not have to fulfill College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) general education requirements.
The B.A. in Global Affairs
has the following major requirements: Major Requirements
1. GLOA 101 Introduction to Global Affairs 2. CONF 336 Globalization, Peace and Conflict 3. CULT 320 Globalization and Culture 4. ECON 385 International Economic Policy 5. EVPP 337 Environmental Policy Making in Developing Countries 6. GOVT 322 International Relations Theory (prerequisite: GOVT 132 or 133)
Students
must demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in one foreign language by
completion of one foreign language course at the 202 level or by a satisfactory
score on an approved proficiency test. In addition, students must complete
either 1) two 300-level courses conducted in that foreign language or 2) any two
courses conducted in another foreign language. Students with advanced-level
proficiency or proficiency in multiple languages should consult the Global
Affairs major advisor about a possible waiver of this requirement. For
non-native English speakers, a passing score on the TOEFL exam satisfies the
intermediate-level proficiency requirement.
Choose
one concentration consisting of 12 credits in specialized courses. The courses
taken to satisfy the concentration requirement must be unique and cannot be
applied to any other major, minor, concentration, or certificate program. For any
concentration, study abroad can reduce the credits required in the
concentration.
Students
may also develop an individualized concentration in collaboration with the major
advisor. Depending on the topic, courses in the “Topics Courses” category
may be applicable to the concentrations. Topics courses may be repeated if
course content is significantly different; approval by the major advisor is
required. 500-level courses (marked with an *) also require advisor approval.
For any concentration, approved study abroad may reduce the credits required,
depending on the courses taken. International internships or internships with an
international focus may reduce the credits required.
