Externship TrainingA part-time clinical externship, generally in an off-campus facility, is optional for all students in the third or fourth year of the program. GMU students compete with students from other Washington, DC area clinical programs for positions in dozens of sites including the following. Previous testing experience required; must be familiar with Wechsler and Woodcock Johnson assessment instruments at minimum; an ideal training site for students in the doctoral program who have a goal of becoming more proficient in testing and interpretation of results. As most of our clients are children and adolescents, these training opportunities are ideal for either students who have experience in testing adults and would like to gain specialized training with a younger population, or those who have tested children but want more experience in using either neuropsychological or educational instruments. The extern will work closely with the program director at the main hospital in Washington, D.C. in conducting diagnostic evaluations, and providing individual treatment. On occasion, extern also may co-lead group treatment sessions. Formal in-person weekly supervision as well as ongoing informal supervision and didactic training in anxiety disorders are provided by a licensed clinical psychologist (Dr. Alfano). The extern also will have the opportunity to attend weekly psychiatry grand rounds, clinical seminars and case conferences within the hospital. Neuropsychology Associates of Fairfax Contact Person: Cynthia Sullivan, Ph.D. 16 hours per week. Full-year externship is 12 months, but summer externs are also welcome. Stipend: None available. Services/Population: Externs will have the opportunity to conduct neuropsychological evaluations with a diverse population. Batteries range from brief (2 hours) to full (5-6 hours). Extern will be trained in all aspects of evaluation, including: clinical interview, test administration, test selection, test interpretation, report write-up, the development of treatment recommendations, consultation with referral sources, and feedback sessions. The patient population is heterogeneous with regard to culture, ethnicity, and diagnosis. Supervision: Supervision will be tailored to skill level of extern. Minimum of 1 hour per 3-4 hours of client contact. In addition, externs will receive continuous “informal” supervision throughout administration of the test battery and report write-up. University of Maryland Baltimore County Contact: Chris Carlton, Ph.D. The externship is a nine month (September through May), 12-16 hour per week experience which involves participation in many UCS activities. Externs provide individual counseling for clients who have predominantly personal-social concerns, and gain experience and skill in brief psychotherapy. The externs receive both individual and group supervision and present in case conferences. They may also have the opportunity to co-lead groups and provide outreach programming. A weekly seminar program includes presentations and discussions on a wide range of topics related to clinical work and professional identity, for example, multi-cultural counseling, the therapeutic process, brief treatment models, and outreach training.
