Dr. Gessner served as a trainee at the Veterans Administration while in graduate school.  After completion of his graduate training he was employed as a research psychologist at a private psychiatric hospital, and his duties included evaluation of treatment programs within the hospital.  Since 1973, Dr. Gessner has served as a faculty member in the Psychology Department at GMU.  His primary duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in social psychology.  He has also developed and taught a number of specialized research methods courses including clinical and social research techniques, naturalistic methods, evaluation research, and survey research.  His research has been in the areas of sex-role identity, sense of humor, and destructive behaviors in organizations.
