Dr. Smith has been at GMU for his entire professional career, but
has also consulted on projects with the USDA (behavioral effects of a pesticide)
and the U.S. Army (behavioral effects of nerve warfare agents). His
research centers around effects of drugs and chemicals on behavioral and
neurological development; recent work has emphasized later stages of development,
and his current funding addresses behavioral, genomic, neurochemical and
neuroanatomical indices of adolescent consumption of nicotine, alcohol,
and cocaine. He is currently collaborating with Karl Fryxell
in the Center for Biomedical
Genomics and Informatics, and Susan Bachus in the Krasnow
Institute. Abstracts of current
funding and this year’s presentations
at the SFN meetings, and a recent review article [Animal
Models of Periadolescent Substance Abuse] describe current work.
His work has appeared in journals such as Pharmacology, Biochemistry
& Behavior, Neurotoxicology & Teratology, and Physiological
Psychology. He regularly teaches courses in physiological psychology,
introductory psychology, psychopharmacology, and substance abuse.
