Changes to the BS/SE Curriculum

Attention entering BS/SE students:

Effective Fall 06 we will change the order of the SYST 201/202/203/301 sequence. If you have taken these courses these changes will not affect you and you may skip to the last item on this page under Other Changes

What we have done, in a nutshell, is to change the order in which the courses are taken, and tighten the prerequisite structure. We have cycled SYST 301 to be the first course in the sequence (in semester 3) and moved SYST 201 and 202 back by one semester to semesters 4 and 5 respectively. The advantage of this change is that students will get a real taste of systems engineering earlier on in their studies, and will be better prepared for the SYST 201/202 sequence. Furthermore it would make the fourth semester more manageable. The Matlab course SYST 203 will be offered in conjunction with SYST 201 rather than 202, in semester 4.

In order to accomodate these changes we had to renumber the courses (as well as SYST 302) to reflect their recommended semester and level. The changes are as follows:

New Courses Old Courses
Number Semester Title Number Semester Title
SYST 210 3 (Fall) Systems Design SYST 301 5 (Fall) Systems Design
SYST 220 4 (Spring) Dynamic Systems I SYST 201 3 (Fall) Discrete Dynamic

SYST 203 4 (Spring) Systems Modeling

SYST 320 5 (Fall) Dynamic Systems II SYST 202 4 (Spring) Continuous Dynamic

SYST 330 6 (Spring) Systems Methods SYST 302 6 (Spring) Systems Methods

Note:

  • Although SYST 220 will be a Spring course beginning Spring 07, it will be also be offered (on a one time basis) in Fall 06. The Fall 06 class will assume the old prereqs of SYST 201. Thereafter the standard prereqs/coreqs of SYST 220 will be enforced.
  • Although SYST 320 will be a Fall course beginning 07, Fall 07 it will be also be offered (on a one time basis) in Spring 07. The Spring 07 class will assume the old prereqs of SYST 202. Thereafter the standard prereqs/coreqs of SYST 320 will be enforced.

Other Changes

  • The Physics Department has decided to split PHYS 160 (4:3:1) will be split into
    • PHYS 160, University Physics I, 3-credits
    • PHYS 161, University Physics I Lab, 1-credit
Both courses are required as part of the BSSE curriculum.
  • HIST 120 is no longer a required University gen education requirement. Instead, all IT&E students are now required to take a Fine Arts elective. If you were required to take HIST 120 under your catalog you will not need to substitute the Fine Arts elective

Please take the time to look over these changes and study these changes.
