In the 2002 USMA Capstone Design Conference,
the project "Autonomous Air Traffic Management System" was named the best design project in the
commercial analysis category. Team members were Kenneth McKneely, team
captain, Pirooz Javan, Abdulaziz Faghi, Keegan Johnson, and Khang Nguyen
The project
involved developing the physical architecture and details for an unmanned air traffic
control tower that could be operated at small, low-density airports. The team
consulted with CACI Technologies Inc., which plans to use some of the information
the students developed in producing a working system.
Other student teams in the competition came from the U.S. Military Academy, the University of Arizona, the U.S. Air Force Academy, Northwestern
Yet another student team tied for second place
in the systems innovation category of the 2002 National NASA Student
Design Competion, for their project on "Fractional Ownership of Aircraft."
There were over 20 entries from engineering programs
from some of the best engineering schools.
Over 20 reviewers representing NASA Langley, NASA Glenn, the
FAA, universities, industry, and nonprofit organizations judged the competition. Each
proposal was reviewed by a minimum of five separate reviewers.
Scores were averaged and the top three scores were selected to
receive awards.
Team members were Daila Kalns-Hughes team captain, Carl Hubbard Jr., Shayma Ibrahim,
Usmaan Javed, Omar Kalaly and Rasoul Zakerinasar.
SEOR Professor Andrew Sage was awarded the 2002 International Council on
Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Pioneer Award
The Pioneer Award is presented at the INCOSE annual symposium to a
distinguished individual or team, who by their achievements in the
engineering of systems, has contributed uniquely to major products or
outcomes enhancing society or its needs. The criteria may apply to a
single outstanding outcome or a lifetime of significant achievements in
effecting successful systems.
Previous award recipients have been:
Simon Ramos (1997), Derek Hitchins(1998)
Eberhardt Rechtin (1999), Ben Blanchard and Wolt Fabrycky (2000), and
Kevin Forsberg and Harold Mooz (2001).
Dr. Sage was also one of three eminent members recognized in 2002 by Eta Kappa Nu, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Honor Society.
Igor Griva was awarded the Carl M. Harris Award for excellence in Operations Research.
Dr. Griva, who completed his Ph.D under Professor. Roman Polyak in August, has accepted a post-doc position at Princeton University in the Operations Research and Financial Engineering Department.
Doctoral sudent Richard Xie was awarded the Douglas R. Miller
Scholarship Award. The award iis given for outstanding work in
computational probability and simulation.
