HISTORY The incandescent light bulb is an extremely important factor in day to day life. Without it we could not give sufficient light in large places, or see when it is dark outside, etc. Since the late 1800's there have been many variations of the incandescent light bulb, too many to describe. So, we will look at three of the most important: Edison's first light, the tungsten filament bulb, and the bulbs we use in our everyday life. We will also take a look at how a light bulb works and what it is we see when the light is on. Thomas Edison patented his first incandescent light in 1879. After numerous tests and experiments carbon thread was found to be inexpensive and sufficient for the filament. A vacuum was then created to reduce the rate of evaporation. Edison and his team then had to devise a way to encase the bulb and vacuum and find materials to hold the carbon filament.
