PROBLEMS No light bulb can last forever. When a bulb burns out there is a reason besides the fact that the bulb may be old. What happens is that the filament does not evaporate evenly. This will cause parts of the filament to become thinner and weaker. Since the current surging through the filament must be even the thinner parts generate more heat. Those thinner parts also have less surface area leading to less heat being radiated away causing it to evaporate quicker. This eventually leads to the breaking or melting of the filament, or as is stated colloquially a blown bulb. |
