SECOND ADVANCEMENT Not many changes were made after the tungsten filament replacement. Experiments with other metals continued as well as experimentation with gas to slow the rate of evaporation more. Most experiments proved to be too troublesome or were economically impossible to mass-produce. A common problem was that the filament of the bulb, as it was used, tended to become very weak and disfigured. Changes were made to the bulb by coiling the coils of tungsten and supporting it in the middle with another tiny wire, giving us the modern light bulb. |
