HOW IT WORKS

Now that we know what a light bulb is and what it consists of let us look at how it works. Electric power is given to the point of contact. Excited electrical molecules then pass up through the lead-in wire to the filament heating it up. The extreme heat temperatures, which are higher than the sun's surface, create visible light. If the filament does not exhaust some of its heat it will burn out very quickly. So ideally the filament rids of some of its heat by radiating it away. This is where the vacuum comes into play. Air oxidizes the filament at high temperatures. The vacuum exhausts heat and slows evaporation extending the life of the filament.
