Allison Frendak-Blume
Academic Director,
Peace Operations Policy Program
The Peace Operations Policy Program at the George Mason School of Public Policy takes an interdisciplinary approach to the implications of multinational peacekeeping in an increasingly unstable and sometimes violent world. It considers the military, humanitarian, and political ramifications of intervening in global conflicts in a constant exploration of new ways to resolve them.
"Experiences in peace operations since 9/11 demonstrate the need for a clear understanding of all that is involved in creating conditions for enduring peace," says Allison Frendak-Blume, the program's academic director. "In the Peace Operations Program, we engage our students in analyzing how changing dynamics, both globally and locally, impact international military and civilian peacemakers and the troubled societies they seek to help."
The program's course work is augmented by extensive research, which may be presented to policymakers at the United Nations and other multilateral agencies. Program participants have played critical roles in advising peace actions in Iraq, Bosnia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
In addition to academic work, the faculty and staff engage in research (including ongoing development of the Conceptual Model of Peace Operations) and in practical application (including evaluation of conflict resolution programs in Liberia and Rwanda).
