R. Alan King
Alan King is the president of Consequence Management, Inc. and a recognized authority in Middle Eastern Affairs and security. He commanded the 422d Civil Affairs Battalion in Baghdad, Iraq (2003) and then served as deputy director for the Coalition Provisional Authority’s Office of Provincial Outreach (2003-04). Among other duties, King met with over 3,300 sheikhs and clerics, was a senior member of the ceasefire talks in Fallujah, and coordinated with tribal sheikhs in An Najaf in response to the uprising led by the radical cleric Muktada Al-Sadr. His soon-to-be released book, Twice Armed: An American Soldier’s Battle for Hearts and Minds in Iraq, centers on his experiences and offers thoughts on what it will take to win Iraqi hearts and minds. King previously served as assistant chief of staff for personnel and chief of the Reserve Personnel Division at HQ, U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command and HQ, United States Army Special Operations Command (1995-2002); adjunct professor at North Carolina Wesleyan College (1997-99); and command and staff positions with the XVIII Airborne Corps and 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne)(1987-91). He holds an M.A. International Relations and Management from Webster University and a bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University. King is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Air War College and the Army Command and General Staff College.
