Making constructive changes, realizing goals, and solving problems are very important values for scholars. They are motivated and empowered by these challenges and provide an invaluable example of what it means to make positive contributions to the community.
Scholars Program
Scholars have meaningful leadership opportunities, including roles available as a Resident Assistant, Peer Advisor, Class Representative, and positions on various scholar committees. They serve to enrich their community through these various leadership roles and make important contributions to the scholars’ community and programs.
Mentoring Assessment Group (MAG)
The Mentor Assessment Group (MAG) consists of a small group of chosen scholars who help oversee and evaluate the mentorship program that pairs older scholars with new scholars. MAG also makes recommendations to the University Scholars Office regarding improvements and needs of the program.
Leadership and Development Program
In partnership with the Mason Leadership Institute, the University Scholars Office provides seminars and educational programs on leadership. These learning sessions include a leadership training workshop by the President of George Mason University, Dr. Alan G. Merten. Scholars also have the opportunity to participate in LeaderShape, a nationally recognized leadership development program. Scholars have indicated that these opportunities have been invaluable in equipping them with knowledge and experiences that further refine their skills as leaders and help them to succeed.
Class Representatives and Committee Chairs
Scholars can develop outstanding leadership skills through service as class representatives and committee chairs. Class representatives are elected by their peers in their respective scholar classes. Every year, each class votes for two individuals to represent their class and work directly with the University Scholars Office in supporting the goals and aspirations of fellow scholars and in addressing key challenges, issues, and concerns that scholars may have.
Scholars can also serve as chairpersons on various committees that organize events and activities for the Scholar and Mason communities. These committees ar:- Global Action
- Intramural
- Recruitment
- Service
- Social
- Visual Identity
Campus Organizations
Beyond the engaging programs offered by the University Scholars Office, scholars can participate and take on leadership roles in any of over 175 Mason campus organizations. If scholars cannot find an organization that meets their needs and interests, they can request to start an organization through the Student Activities Office and to be officially recognized by the University. Some university organizations that scholars might want to consider are Student Government, Sororities and Fraternities, Student Organizations, Forensics Team, Mason Ambassadors, and Senior Peer Advisors, to name a few.
