We hope our services will help your students
to excel as writers at George Mason University. The Center provides students
with both face-to-face
and online
tutoring, and has assembled an online
Writer's Library, which contains handouts
dealing with common college writing difficulties, and an extensive Virtual
Reference Desk. The Center also runs a program of workshops each semester.
The Writing Center offers a referral service to faculty
in all disciplines. If you wish to refer a student for help with her/his
writing, please fill print out and fill in our recommendation
form and include as much detail as possible on the writing skills with
which your student needs help. A copy of the student's assignment, or a
clear description of it, is also very useful. Ask the student to bring
the form to the consultation. If you would like a response from the tutor
who works with your student, please let us know.
The Writing Center can also tailor writing support to
the requirements of your class. The Center has provided specialist tutors
to history and business classes, for example, and organized dedicated online
tutoring for distance education classes. Please contact the Director as
soon as possible if you would like customized writing assistance for a
particular course. ?links to reports on customized tutoring?
English as a Second language consultants provide specialized
services to non-native speakers of English. ESL speakers in your classes
may request appointments with these consultants. They also advise faculty
on working with ESL students, as does The English Language Institute.
Should you be interested in exploring assignments for
your students that involve writing, please look at
Linked Courses and Writing
Across the Curriculum which include ideas for writing and sample syllabi,
often with assignments attached.
Should you have any suggestions for new services, or comments
about current services, please contact the Director.
