Tom Huff, the director of Shared Research Instrumentation Facility, successfully mentored two students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) in fall 2010. Two mentees worked on the projects to study the endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs). They developed the methods on LC-MS and LCMS-IT-TOF to separate a mixture of PPCPs and EDCs (more details) . EDCs comprise a diverse group of compounds displaying a broad array of molecular structures and physiochemical properties. Two mentees are doing the study of 19 analytes of EDCs, including steroidal hormones, chlorinated pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, etc. PPCPs refer to any product used by individuals for personal health or cosmetic reasons or used by agribusiness to enhance growth or health of livestock. PPCPs comprise a diverse collection of thousands of chemical substances, including prescription and over-the-counter therapeutic drugs, veterinary drugs, fragrances, and cosmetics. SRIF provided the mentees with our advanced technologies and instruments (such as LC-MS, and LC-MS-MS instruments), which enable them to gain the real world experiences and skills which can not be taught in their classroom. |
