General education courses are required for all undergraduate students seeking a baccalaureate degree. Freshmen and sophomores generally should only take 100-200 level courses unless otherwise advised.
The courses listed below are being offered in Spring 2009 are appropriate for freshmen and sophomores assuming they have met all prerequisites. For a more comprehensive list of courses that fulfill general education requirements, please refer to the University Catalog.
Be aware that some colleges and schools require specific general education courses to fulfill requirements. Students must fulfill university and college requirements. Only the University Requirements are required by all majors. The college requirements differ by major. Students should always meet with their advisor before making course decisions.
Written Communication
Two written communication courses are required. Students must complete ENGL 101 or 100 (for non-native speakers of English) and ENGL 302. Typically students take ENGL 101 or 100 their first year and ENGL 302 their sophomore or junior year.
Oral Communication
Students are required to take one oral communication course. Choose from the following courses:
Information Technology
The Information Technology requirement consists of: a) information technology (IT) and b) ethics. IT 103 fulfills both. Please see the University Catalog for more IT options.
Quantitative Reasoning
Students are required to take a math placement test before they take a MATH course. The correct math course will depend on your major. See the Mathematics department's web site for more information.
Natural Science
Most majors require student to take two lab science courses for a total of eight credits. There are very few majors that require one lab science and one non lab. To see the non-lab science courses please refer to the University Catalog.
Most college and schools at George Mason have additional college level requirements. The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) and the College of Science (COS) have the same college requirements. See the lists below for course information. The courses listed are all 100-200 level. For a complete list of the college level requirements please go to the CHSS website.
Under some circumstances, students may use a single course to fulfill more than one college-level requirement. It is also possible under some circumstances to use a single course to fulfill a university general education requirement and a college-level requirement or a requirement for the major. Students will only receive credit for the one course, but they will have fulfilled more than one requirement. See an academic advisor for more information.
