Sophia University is one of the most renowned private universities in Japan. It was founded in 1906, by Pope Pius X, as the first Catholic university in Japan. The university has been a leader in internationalization in Japan by providing educational opportunities and has a outstanding reputation in the fields of international relations and foreign studies.
There are more than 500 foreign students from 54 countries enrolled at Sophia University, and about 100 foreign professors from 20 different countries. All courses in the Faculty of Comparative Culture are taught in English.
Sophia is located in the heart of Tokyo close to the Imperial Palace. The school falls at the junction of three subway lines, as well as two local trains making commuting and touring easily accessible and reliable.
The Faculty of Comparative Culture consists of two departments: the Department of Comparative Culture, which encompasses study in the humanities, international business and economics, and social studies, and the Department of Japanese Language and Studies, which focuses on the study of Japanese language, culture, and society. The curriculum of each department is complementary to that of the other and both aim at developing individuals with a broad vision, equipped linguistically and intellectually to contribute to a world that is rapidly becoming internationalized politically, economically, and culturally. All courses at the Faculty of Comparative Culture are taught in English with the exception of language courses. Students take a minimum of four classes per semester.
